Become your own Personal Trainer - motivate yourself!

I know it's not easy. I am a personal trainer and it can still be difficult to find the motivation to go to the gym or take the class but if one of your goals is to get a healthier body then you need to hear this.

How do you motivate yourself?

Have a goal that excites you, it's all in the mind first. This guy or girl or whatever, knows the way forwards.

Like in the GIF, Colin, the multi-gendered whatever it is, keeps its motivation right above. Sure it's going to be hard to start off with but eventually you'll get the hang of it. A good PT will:

  • communicate effectively

  • always have a plan

  • know how to progress and regress. In other words, how to modify your plan/workout

  • encourage, motivate & inspire

  • hold you accountable for your success

Yes there's more but for this, I want to touch upon the roots of your physical health objectives and make sure you set yourself up for achievement and not failure. It's all about how you communicate with yourself and I mean, that inner dialogue.

We're going to cover how to write a supportive script backed with uplifting and positive affirmations, that will keep you going when you want to snuggle on the sofa instead of hitting the gym.

So let's go...

What you feed your mind has a direct effect on how you feel about something!

The Script - what the heck is this?

The script is going to be a written document that you read often to remind yourself of why you're putting yourself through the efforts you have planned to do. It will lift you when you feel down, excite you when you're bored and thrust you into action when it gets hard.

I highlighted...encourage, motivate & inspire...this is because it's exactly what the theme of your script and affirmations ought to be.

Let's say that your goal is to be toned, lose some belly fat and improve your fitness so you can run upstairs without coughing and getting out of breath.

Now a basic starting affirmation/script could be...

"I am in control of my choices, I am going to achieve my goals and I am successful, positive and happy."

Some people will be ok with this alone and that's great. That's essentially an affirmation. But others might benefit from a more detailed sentence or written as a supportive collection of uplifting sentences (paragraph). What if you tried this...

"Everyday I act with intensity, purpose and belief in order to ensure the successful achievement of my physical health goals which fills me with joy, confidence and energy."

This is only a slightly longer sentence but now it's got more meat on it.

Some prefer meat on the bones, others not so much!!! Both are just personal preferences - each to their own!

What if we took it in a totally different direction like this...in advance you're about to watch and listen to something that some viewers might find offensive, repulsive or just disturbing!!! *Having a sense of humour as you make life changes will go a long long way to motivating you...you've been warned...so here you go...watch up to 2 minutes 10 seconds!

I can only apologise for what you've just seen and heard but if you imagine this is how you talk to yourself, how might you feel? In this surprising video, I'd assume that he's actually quite self-assured, with a high level of self-esteem and doesn't lack confidence. Whether that would be a good thing for us, I'm not sure, but for him - possibly a very positive, honest way of seeing himself, despite his current circumstances.

My point - your script is something that you write for yourself. It should be something that reflects your own unique personality that you really believe in. Written in a way that inspires you, in the way you appreciate language, swear words if necessary. Nobody has to see this - it's for your eyes only!

What's important is that it's positive, uplifting, specific to your goals, refers to the emotions/feelings you want to feel, that describes the elation you will feel when you have achieved your goal and brings about a true smile on your face after reading it.

MOST PEOPLE WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO DO ALL THE HARD WORK BUT ONLY YOU CAN GIVE YOUR GOALS SPECIFIC ENCOURAGING, MOTIVATING & INSPIRING MEANING.

Add your personality to your goals. They belong to you. Have fun with it but take is seriously - you can do both.

Becoming your own PT means to become the person that motivates yourself, that relies on your inner strengths of character, that keeps yourself on track when those around you have left the stadium.

You can extend your script /affirmations to something like this, if you are religious or spiritual...

"I am always growing as a person and as a spiritual being. Consequently, everyday my energetic vibration rises higher and is more aligned with the energy of God and the universe. Therefore, I think, feel and act, as though I have the wish fulfilled which radiates within me as pure, divine and magnetic ecstasy of goal achievement and satisfaction."

Learn to become creative, compassionate and supporting of the way you talk to yourself. You can start with simple written down affirmations - there are plenty all over the internet but what I'm suggesting is that you create your own from nothing. Make it all about you. Do what these guys are doing...

Ensure that distractions don't divert your attention from your physical goals. It's your body, and when you allow distractions, you miss out on the satisfaction of feeling incredible—not just about your appearance, but more importantly, about your personal growth in achieving your goals.

Below are some examples you could use!

For motivation and self-belief

  • "I am strong and capable."

  • "I am getting stronger and healthier."

  • "I can do anything I set my mind to."

  • "I am in control of my health and fitness."

  • "I am proud of myself for showing up today."

To build commitment and consistency

  • "I am committed to making fitness a part of my daily life."

  • "Every workout brings me one step closer to reaching my goals."

  • "I am creating a healthier, stronger version of myself."

  • "Exercise is a priority in my life."

To focus on the feeling and benefits of exercise

  • "I love moving my body and feel good when I exercise."

  • "Exercise helps me feel energised, focused, and grounded."

  • "My fitness gives me strength, endurance, and confidence."

  • "I am grateful for my body's ability to move."

To overcome challenges

  • "I am stronger than my excuses."

  • "I can and will reach my goals."

  • "When I workout, I feel better both physically and mentally."

Maybe it will help to try something like this, after all, fitness classes can get a little dull from time to time, meanwhile...

Some people might think affirmations are stupid and for weak minded people but affirmations are the exact opposite. They are created by mindful individuals who understand the significance of practising a healthy attitude.

When you have a positive script and affirmations behind your goals, your mind and body will link up (alignment). Through repetition and truly trying to believe in yourself, these affirmations will soon become natural things you say to yourself and the forced practice will become natural habits of the mind, felt with emotion, then acted with and through the body.

Sometimes people don't understand that we use affirmations already but they're usually negative. Everything you say to yourself can be called an affirmation - an affirmation is quite simply a sentence that you say to yourself either within your own mind or out loud.

Practice adding positivity into your mind by creating a collection of uplifting and motivating sentences, whilst being aware of existing negative self-talk.

Positive self-talk is a something you learn - your head can be up but if you fill your mind with negative words, your head will soon bow down to inferiority & ultimately failure.

Intentionally be positive...I know it's not easy. Most of us will be positive for a short time and then think, well this is exhausting and we have a break from it. The problem with this is that we go back to our old ways, instantly.

In order to cheer yourself on from the side lines, you first must clear the negative space from within. We do this by becoming aware of what we say to ourselfes. This is when we can write down the thoughts we say - sit down with a pen and paper and really think about what you say to yourself.

It's hard to be grateful when you feel so down and out, when life has beaten you up for so long, when difficulties seem to be all you ever experience. But you can start to make a positive difference to your own life by being grateful for all the little good things you already have.

When you learn to become grateful for the hard times, you will start to develop a thicker skin - this saying simply means that you become mentally and emotionally tougher - your ability to withstand negativity increases and your ability to believe in positivity increases.

WE DON'T REMOVE NEGATIVITY FROM OUR LIVES; WE EMBRACE IT, TRANSFORM IT, THEN THRIVE WITH IT

With repetition, a clear positive intention, specificity towards your physical goals and gratefulness from suffering, you will start to grow from a state of pessimism to optimism.

A great way to start is by becoming your own personal trainer and motivating yourself. Be very clear. Imagine who you want to become. See yourself as the person you want to become. Live in that moment and use your 5 senses to create that image, to make it as reel as possible.

A common theme for goal setting across the board, no matter what you're aiming for is this - set your desired goal based on your passions, imagine that goal as already being achieved, live in that moment, repeat that process daily, keep thinking, imagining & creating then the feelings of belief will follow.

If you get frustrated and give up, try again a few hours later but it's not failure. Your programme is putting up resistance to you changing the way you operate - your old negative belief system doesn't like change - it will fight you and try to auto-correct as soon as you deviate from the typical plan (Comfort Zone).

When resistance occurs, you're making progress! Repeat again, repeat again, repeat again!

People often give up too soon but it takes time - you have to give yourself time to change. To do that you must be in a mindset of optimism - to be optimistic you must create positivity - to create positivity you must have awareness of what you feed yourself - when you're aware, you can make changes by replacing any negative thoughts into healthier alternatives or opposites.

Full, elongated script, covering multiple life goals:

"I choose positive thoughts because I choose a positive me. I have faith in myself that I will achieve all of my personal goals when it comes to burning my belly fat, toning my muscles and developing my cardio fitness.

Before every session, I can feel my energies increase, my motivation soars as does my enthusiasm to workout; the energy fills every cell in my body with feelings & emotions of self-esteem, confidence and determination.

During each session I challenge myself, I persevere and I achieve my workout targets for the day. As a result I feel accomplished, powerful, successful, more attractive, more alive and connected to my true self.

Each day I strive to be better than the day before, I accept temporary defeats with grace because I understand that no glory can exists without the taste of defeat first. Therefore, I feel mentally, emotionally & spiritually balanced, aligned and significant.

I commit to my future self by living in the moment of now and only reflecting upon the past in short optimistic flashes, in order to appreciate how far I have come and how much I have grown.

I am stronger each day, I am always learning new things and developing my awareness of self, others and the universe around me. My understanding continues to illuminate my thoughts, emotions & actions/behaviours - I am secure in myself because I protect and nurture my soul.

I am happy, healthy & wealthy because I choose to be and I make my life my own, because only I have the unique ability to create what I can see for myself."

When you believe you can, you will - it's a certainty. If no one else believes in you, at least you believe in yourself.

Remember - limit that negative self-talk. Just because you aren't speaking out loud, doesn't mean you inner voice isn't being heard - it is. Be mindful of this - check yourself when you notice you're doing it or seek counsel from those who have successfully navigated the path you seek to explore.

One last thing, as you've just seen motivation will create that spark of energy but it can and often is short-term. The disciplined individual will still be motivated but they'll also be driven, focused & have a plan. Make sure you have a plan for your workouts or you will go into each session without creating the long-term progressions you need. Discipline will help keep your attention on your specific goals - just a heads up!

Speaking of heads up...

Always keep your head up, especially when life makes look down with negativity, pain, trauma, despair, worry, doubts, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, scarcity, poverty - whatever it is. There's nothing wrong with having your head in your hands from time to time but it's essential that look back up.

That temporary moment of darkness, when you block out the light with your hands, is your moment to refuel your soul, by bringing your attention to the light that's always within you.

Your light shines the strongest when you think & feel from a place of love, passion & desire. Especially for those you love and if you don't have anyone to love then at least love yourself. Whether you like it or not, love is the divine lubricant of belonging and when you belong, you are no longer detached - therefore you must be connected and if it's not to others, let it at least and hopefully for only a short-time, be to yourself.

"If you're head's in the clouds, you trip on the floor,

If you're head's on your toes, you'll miss the birds soar.

If your head's on a swivel, your attention's no more,

What's in front, up and down, your awareness is all."

I know it's soppy but in life we have just one chance to live the way we choose to live. So be intentionally you by keeping your eyes on your prize.

Life isn't just about setting goals and achieving things, to get stuff - it's about who you become in the process. Always keep in mind that the person you are and the person you become is a choice. Choose wisely.

Your body is the tool in which you experience life, so look after your body. Be mindful of what you do with it and what you put into it. Your mind is no different, you just can't see it, but you know you have it because you can think and more importantly, you can feel.

Encourage, motivate & inspire yourself to be whatever and whomever you want. Everyone of us is on our own path but our paths will ultimately entangle. It's our individual responsibility to help ourselfes but not to the detriment of your fellow man/woman/whatever. Another heads up!

All endings are beginnings of something else - put your best foot forwards and if you're not sure - JUMP!!!
