Week 4 - Self-Image & Identity: How to Unlock Your True Self and Potential?

Self-image is often misunderstood as just how we look on the outside. But it goes much deeper. It’s about how you feel about yourself on the inside - your intellectual and spiritual self - not just your physical appearance.

Your identity is built from this self-image, and how you think and feel about yourself shapes your personality, attitude, actions, and ultimately your results in life. If you want to change your outcomes, you need to build a better relationship with yourself.

Many people get stuck in a rut because they constantly criticise themselves or feel inadequate. This negative self-talk floods your emotions and sabotages your progress without you even realising it. In this post, I’ll share how to develop awareness of your true worth, build confidence, and reshape your self-image so you can unlock your full potential.

Understanding Self-Image and Identity

Your self-image is the mental picture you hold of yourself. It includes your beliefs about your abilities, your personality traits, and your value as a person. Identity is the combination of this self-image, and how you interpret your experiences and feelings. Together, they influence your confidence and self-esteem.

When your self-image is negative, it limits what you believe you can achieve. For example, if you think, “I’m not smart enough” or “I don’t deserve success,” you will act in ways that confirm those beliefs. This creates a cycle that keeps you stuck.

Changing your self-image means changing the story you tell yourself about who you are. It requires awareness and intentional effort to replace limiting beliefs with positive, authentic truths about yourself.

True self-perception isn't visual - it's intellectual. If you look at yourself through your feelings, you distort the truth.

How to Build Awareness of Your True Self?

Awareness is the first step to transforming your self-image. You need to recognise when you're being self-critical, or doubting your worth. Here are practical ways to build this awareness:

  • Keep a journal to track your thoughts and feelings about yourself. Write down moments when you feel confident and when you feel self-doubt.

  • Notice your self-talk throughout the day. Are you encouraging yourself or putting yourself down?

  • Reflect on your strengths and achievements, no matter how small. This helps you see your real value beyond mistakes or setbacks.

Once you become aware of negative patterns, you can start to challenge and change them.

Creating a List of Positive Traits

One powerful exercise is to list your positive personality traits and character strengths. This list should be honest and specific. For example:

  • I am compassionate and listen well to others.

  • I am curious and enjoy learning new things.

  • I am resilient and keep going even when things get tough.

Review this list daily and remind yourself why you're an awesome person. This practice builds self-esteem and confidence by focusing on your real qualities, not just your physical appearance, or past failures. Remember this: have some fun with the exercise - this is about reconnecting to the real you, the part of you that was the creative and energetic life and soul of your own existence.

It might take some time to think about this, but allow yourself the time to sit and think about what you're good at. What are your strengths, what are your skills, what abilities do you have, what qualities do you have, what's pleasing about your personality, what's positive about your attitude?

Letting Go of the Physical Self as Primary

Many people tie their identity too closely to their physical self - how they look, or how others see them. This limits growth because the body changes, but your true self is your spirit and intellect experiencing life.

To grow, you must shift your focus inward:

  • Recognise that you're a spiritual being with thoughts and feelings, not just a physical body.

  • Value your inner qualities like kindness, creativity, and wisdom.

  • Understand that your worth is not dependent on external validation.

This shift frees you from the trap of comparing yourself to others and feeling inadequate.

Through awareness and the practice of reflection, you can ask yourself specific questions and if you open your mind, and allow a non-subjective answer to come in, you will be on a quest of self-discovery. QUEST-ion!

Using Your Passions and Desires as Motivation

In week 2 of the 12 Week APA reset, you will have identified your wants, passions, and desires. These are powerful triggers for change because they connect you to your authentic self.

When you know what you want from life, you can:

  • Use your passions to fuel inspired action.

  • Set goals that align with your true identity.

  • Break free from limiting beliefs that keep you stuck in mediocre contentment.

For example, if you love helping others, you might pursue a career in counselling or community work. This alignment between your identity and actions builds confidence, and a sense of purpose.

Practical Steps to Change Your Self-Image

Changing your self-image takes time and effort. Here are some steps to get you started:

  • Challenge negative beliefs by asking yourself if they're really true. Replace them with positive affirmations based on your list of traits.

  • Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in you and encourage your growth.

  • Practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend.

  • Take small actions that prove your new self-image. For example, if you want to be confident, practice speaking up in meetings or social situations.

  • Celebrate progress no matter how small. Each step forward strengthens your new identity.

How Changing Self-Image Affects Your Results?

When you improve your self-image, you change how you think, feel and behave. This leads to better decisions, stronger relationships, and more opportunities. Your confidence grows and you take on challenges with a positive attitude.

For example, someone who once believed they were, “not good enough” might start applying for jobs they previously thought were out of reach. With a new self-image, they perform better in interviews, and land a role that fits their skills and passions.

Moving Forward with a Stronger Identity

Your self-image and identity aren't fixed. They evolve as you grow in awareness and confidence. By focusing on your inner qualities and aligning your actions with your true passions, you unlock your potential.

Remember, personal development is a journey. It requires patience and persistence. Start by building a better relationship with yourself today. List your strengths, challenge negative thoughts, and take inspired action towards the life you want.

Your true identity is waiting to be discovered - it's not lost so you don't need to go looking for it - it's already within. You're job is to allow yourself to let them come to the surface. When you embrace it, you open the door to a more fulfilling, confident, and purposeful life.

Who you are becomes what you do. But you've got to make that shift to: "I am me and this is what I do - not this is what I do, so this is who I am." Your core self is on the inside, not the shell around it. Match your self-image to your internal identity, never the other way around.

Unlock your true self by getting to know the real you and improve your self image - your identity will flourish afterwards.
